St. Kinga in the light of legend and history

Archive illustration: St. Kinga in the light of legend and history

The life and work of St. Kinga became surrounded by numerous legends that arose over several centuries after her death. Passed down from generation to generation, the legends grew ever richer and took on an ever more beautiful literary and poetic form. Many sober and learned people, like the common folk, accepted these legends as true, and testified to them under oath in the beatification processes of 1629 and 1684 and in the unfinished canonisation process of St. Kinga of 1742-1747.

The author of this short work tries to show the reader what grew up around the figure of St. Kinga as legend and what is nevertheless historical truth, and how legend complements history.
