Chronology of the life and cult of Saint Kinga

  1. 21.06.1226

    Bolesław the Chaste is born.

  2. 5.03.1234

    Kinga is born, daughter of Béla IV, King of Hungary of the Árpád dynasty, and Maria, daughter of the Byzantine Emperor Theodore I Laskaris.

  3. 1239

    Kinga arrives in Poland and meets Bolesław, Duke of Kraków and Sandomierz, in Wojnicz (sponsalia de futuro); she settles at the ducal court in Sandomierz.

  4. 1241

    Kinga flees from the Tatars with Grzymisława and Bolesław (Kraków, Hungary, the Pieniny, Moravia). Defeat at Chmielnik. Kinga gives 40,000 silver marks for the needs of the country.

  5. 1243

    Return to Poland from exile. The ducal court moves to Nowy Korczyn, as the castles of Kraków and Sandomierz have been destroyed.

  6. 1245

    Salomea receives the religious habit of St. Clare.

  7. After 1246

    Wedding of Kinga and Duke Bolesław in Kraków.

  8. c. 1247

    Kinga stays in Hungary, where she saves her father’s life.

  9. c. 1251

    The first salt shaft is sunk in Bochnia.

  10. 8.09.1253

    Canonisation of St. Stanislaus in Assisi.

  11. 1254

    Foundation of the parish church in Bochnia.

  12. 1256

    Wedding of Yolanda and Bolesław the Pious.

  13. 1257

    Bolesław the Chaste grants Kinga the Sącz land in perpetuity; on 10 March of that year he consents to the building of a monastery in Stary Sącz.

    Death of Grzymisława, Bolesław’s mother, in Kraków.

  15. 1259-1260

    Second Tatar invasion. Kinga and Bolesław find refuge with Leszek the Black at the castle in Sieradz.

  16. 18.06.1266

    Bolesław defeats the Ruthenian prince Shvarn.

  17. 20.09.1266

    Death of Bishop Prandota, adviser to Kinga and Bolesław.

  18. 10.11.1268

    Death of Salomea, sister of Bolesław the Chaste, a Poor Clare, later declared blessed.

  19. 1270

    Death of her father, Béla IV, and her mother, Maria.

  20. 7.12.1279

    Death of Bolesław the Chaste in Kraków.

  21. 1279

    Kinga goes to Stary Sącz to bring about the foundation of the Poor Clare monastery, and stays there.

  22. 6.07.1280

    She issues the foundation charter of the Monastery of the Poor Clares in Stary Sącz.

  23. c. 1284

    Agreement between Kinga and Leszek the Black.

  24. 1287-1288

    Third Tatar invasion. Flight to the Pieniny.

  25. 1288

    Return from the Pieniny. Kinga begins her novitiate.

  26. 24.04.1289

    Kinga makes her religious profession.

  27. 21.09.1291

    Kinga falls ill; the illness lasts until the end of her life.

  28. 24.07.1292

    Kinga dies with a reputation for holiness.

  29. c. 1307

    Her relics are moved from the ground to a stone tomb. Graces and miracles obtained through Kinga’s intercession begin to be recorded.

  30. 8.06.1629

    The beatification process begins.

  31. 1.03.1684

    The beatification process is resumed and the missing files are completed.

  32. 11.06.1690

    Beatification of Kinga.

  33. 1733

    Efforts for Kinga’s canonisation begin.

    XVIII - XIX

    The partitions of Poland and the dissolution of the monastery. The cult of Kinga weakens.

  34. 1892

    Solemn celebration of the 600th anniversary of Kinga’s death. Her relics are moved to a new reliquary.

  35. From XX c.

    From the beginning of the 20th century the cult of Kinga grows and efforts for her canonisation are taken up again.

  36. 1990

    The Franciscan Fathers take over the canonisation cause of Kinga. The duties of postulator are taken over by Fr Ambrogio Sanna, who on 16 April 1990 appoints Fr Izydor Borkiewicz, a Franciscan, as his vice-postulator in Poland.

  37. 1993

    The Bishop of Tarnów, Józef Życiński, appoints a new Historical Commission to evaluate the material collected so far and to indicate where further searches for historical documents should be made. On 26 May 1994 the Historical Commission completes its work, having gathered the necessary documents, extracts from historical sources and quotations from the works of Polish and foreign historians.

  38. 22.02.1994

    The process concerning a miraculous healing through the intercession of St. Kinga begins. From 5 to 24 March the witnesses are heard, and on 26 May the closing session of the process is held in Tarnów, chaired by Archbishop Józef Życiński.

  39. 26.05.1994

    The files are sent to the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of Saints. On the same day the last session of the Historical Commission is held. The process files are sealed and sent to Rome on 24 July 1994.

  40. 22.10.1996

    The Postulation of the Conventual Friars Minor hands over the Positio super virtutibus beatae Cunegundis to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

  41. 1996-1998

    The process concerning the heroic virtues of St. Kinga ends with the promulgation of the decree.

  42. 1998-1999

    The process concerning a healing through the intercession of St. Kinga.

  43. 12.02.1999

    The Holy Father confirms the outcome of the process concerning the healing through the intercession of St. Kinga.

  44. 16.06.1999

    John Paul II canonises the Lady of the Sącz Land in Stary Sącz.
